Striving for perfection in Hainaut
Diamond Golf Architects has recently been appointed to perform a full audit on the renowned Royal Golf Club du Hainaut, concentrating in particular on the location and form of the existing bunkers. Designed in 1938 by the esteemed English golf architect, Tom Simpson, the 6695-yard par 72 course is already often described as 'one of the best golf courses in northern Europe', yet it seems the aim is to improve on perfection!

Dimitri enhances the Krokkebaas offering
Originally designed by Golf Architect Bruno Steensels, Golfclub Krokkebaas opened in 1995 and is located at the edge of a protected area of woodland in Buggenhout, Belgium. The Club is now working with Dimitri to extend and enhance this 6-hole strategically designed course with an additional 4 par 3 holes. The existing holes are short, and the new holes will improve the diversity of the course by being better in length. USGA greens and the highest standard full catchbasin drainage system are also being installed at the club. Work is currently in progress.

Spotlight on: Tom Simpson
Many describe Tom Simpson as 'One of the great golf course architects'. Born in England in 1877 Simpson was from a wealthy mining family. As a young man in 1895 he went on to study Law at Cambridge University leading on to a place on the Bar, but it wasn't long before golf got in the way. Simpson was a member at Woking Golf Club and it was during this time in the early 1900's that the course was redesigned and this inspired Tom to change careers, applying his brilliant legal brain to all-things-golf from then on. He soon became an advocate for strategic golf architecture and firmly believed that golf should be an intellectual battle, not a physical one. Over the years that followed Simpson dedicated his life to golf course architecture and design, and wrote about the subject frequently. As a man he is described as 'often controversial' and 'eccentric', 'a superb artist and art critic' who was also a collector of cigars, Persian rugs, walking sticks, and wines.

Today many believe that he is something of an 'unsung hero' whose deserved position is alongside Harry Colt and Alistair MacKenzie as one of the greats. There are highly acclaimed golf courses across Europe that continue to be attributed to the brilliance of Simpson and Diamond Golf Architects is proud to have worked on 3 Simpson courses over the past 2 years.
